CARNIVAL VILLAGE

Carnival Village is a new community celebration of masquerade, music, dance and storytelling that will take place August 8 – 13 in Toronto’s Regent Park, presented by Caribbean Community Engagement for the 2016 Daniels Spectrum Summer Series.

Carnival Village is a week-long multidisciplinary program of activities culminating in a Caribbean-styled street parade and whose goal is to promote the multicultural identity of the Regent Park downtown community and its neighbors. The festival is a family-friendly event and will engage all ages, in particular youth, in a series of workshops, concerts and street theatre to encourage creativity and self-expression. The festivals’ activities are designed to foster a deeper understanding of the artistic and cultural value of the Carnival Arts and to raise awareness of Carnival's role as a social custom and cultural celebration.

The Carnival Village will bring together members of the Regent Park community with professional mas’ costume designers, dance instructors, drum circle facilitators and storytellers - to create social music and community performance art. The festival seeks to partner with local organizations and groups to come together to create a spectacular celebration through cultural exchange.

Caribbean Community Engagement is a not-for-profit arts group affiliated with the Festival Management Committee, producers of the Toronto Caribbean Carnival - the largest festival of its kind in North America. The Toronto Caribbean Carnival will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year. The Carnival Village is presented with the generous support of Artscape Inc..
